■What is KIAST?
The Korea Institute of Aviation Safety Technology (KIAST) is a government-affiliated institution in South Korea that specializes in the research and development of safety technologies for aviation and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones). Since its establishment, KIAST has been committed to improving and establishing aviation safety standards in South Korea through the certification of aircraft safety, evaluation of air traffic control and safety facilities, and the operation of drone test flight sites. In the field of drones, KIAST focuses on the development of drone traffic management systems and supports drone companies while formulating safety regulations unique to South Korea in alignment with international standards. KIAST also conducts research on international aviation safety standards, promoting initiatives that enable South Korea to exercise leadership in the global aviation industry. Its activities are extensive, including failure analysis of aircraft and analysis of aviation safety data, actively working to prevent accidents. Through these efforts, KIAST plays a vital role in advancing safety technology in South Korea’s aviation industry and supporting the safe operation of unmanned aerial vehicles.
■Message from KIAST
KIAST is a public organization specialized in aviation safety that nurtures aviation safety experts necessary for aviation safety, and it is dedicated to certifying, testing, researching, and technology development for aviation accident and incident prevention.
It has been actively supporting the drone industry development, an innovative growth industry, by building infrastructure, improving regulations, funding and supporting corporate development, and is expanding its role as an aviation safety agency in preparation for the advent of Urban Air Mobility (UAM).
Through the MOU with JUIDA, we see this as an important opportunity for both organizations to collaborate in advancing the drone industry in both Korea and Japan. We hope that through continued cooperation, the drone industry will strengthen its global competitiveness, leveraging the technology and experience of both countries.
